Understanding the Furry Fandom and Community in the Midwest

You may have heard the word “furry” before—maybe in the news, online, or from a creative friend—but what exactly is a furry?

In short, a furry is someone who enjoys anthropomorphic animals—animals with human traits, like walking upright, speaking, wearing clothes, or expressing emotions. Think characters like Disney’s Zootopia, Robin Hood, or even Sonic the Hedgehog. The furry fandom celebrates this idea through art, performance, writing, and community.

What Do Furries Do?

People in the furry fandom express themselves in all kinds of creative ways. Here are just a few:

  • Creating original characters (called fursonas) that represent themselves
  • Drawing, commissioning, or collecting furry art
  • Writing and reading furry stories or comics
  • Attending fur meets and conventions to socialize and build community
  • Wearing fursuits or costume pieces to perform, entertain, or just have fun

Some furries are artists, some are performers, and some just love the vibe—it’s a very welcoming and inclusive space.

Why Join the Furry Fandom?

For many, the furry fandom is more than just a hobby—it’s a community that provides creative freedom, friendship, and a sense of belonging. Whether you’re introverted or outgoing, there’s a place for everyone. People often explore identity, self-expression, and new friendships through the fandom.
